"From cultures around the world we gathered our favorite foods and made
them our own. Hot dogs and ice cream cones, cookies and chocolate,
hamburgers and pizzas, barbeque and beer, fried chicken and the sandwich,
the foods we eat have become emblems of America itself. They are fast, fun and
a little funky. They are mass produced and custom made. And each food has an
amazing story to tell," states TV.com's blurb for one of the History Channel's
hottest new television series, American Eats. And when telling such a story, the
History Channel is going full force with HD. With a large amount of stock footage,
archivals, and problematic source materials being used for the content, HD post
production can be a daunting task. So when Atlas Media, the largest television
production company on the East Coast, had to finish thirteen episodes of
American Eats under tight deadlines, they came to Digital Arts.
The work was first offlined at Atlas on an Avid, where final picture was locked,
and then onlined at Digital Arts in the Avid Symphony Nitris suite. Since the offline
made extensive use of third party plug-ins, Digital Arts chose the Symphony Nitris
as its workstation, which offers the smoothest workflow going from Avid offline to
HD online. By using the Symphony, which it is a great editing system as well as
a great finishing box, and keeping the worlkflow on the Avid, Digital Arts turned
around episodes under very tight deadlines. The team loaded a combination of
HD footage from HDCAM and an extensive amount of high resolution stills using
Stagetools, as well as a large portion of Standard Definition archival and stock footage.
The Standard Definition footage was upconverted to HD through the Teranex Xantus
box, which to date remains the leading real time solution for HD upconversions.
The color correct was done in less than one week using the powerful real-time color
corrector of the Symphony.
